Weekly Recap: Charleston Snow Day! (1/1-1/7)

Hello, 2018!

2018 certainly got off to a blustery start here in normally sunny and tropical Charleston! And the title of the post is a little misleading. We had more than one snow day. We had a whole week of snow days when a once-in-a-lifetime snow storm hit us on Wednesday. Charleston hasn't had that much snow since 1989 and it's rare that we even see one flake in the winter. We ended up with close to 6 inches where I live, along with lots of ice and no plows or salt trucks.

Even though I went back to work at the day job, it still felt like an extended Christmas vacation with the snowy weather. I work from home, so it's always easier to go back after a staycation than if I worked in an office, but last week was a bit different since B was home from school every day but Tuesday and we were snowed/iced in most of the week. Somehow, I still managed to get a ton of work done, even with B camped on my lap.

The bad news is I still can't really run.

The good news is my piriformis is definitely on the mend. I'm able to stand up straight again and am not in constant pain. I still have some pain depending on what position I'm in, but generally I'm feeling pretty good.

I did several yoga workouts, although not as many as originally planned because the studio was closed for snow, and one strength workout at F45.

I still felt it was smart to (mostly) rest from running for this week, but I couldn't resist at least a short slow run out in the snow. I've never run in snow before, and I have no idea when I'll ever get the chance to run in snow again, so I had to do it. I kept it slow, partially because of my piriformis and partially because of snow and ice, and I'm not prepared for running in that. But it was fun!

Not a sight I ever thought I'd see in Charleston

I felt okay running, but had a bit of pain when I stopped. I'm definitely not ready to be out logging miles regularly again yet.

With that, I'll leave you with pictures of our snowy week. Enjoy!

Snow day in CHarleston, South Carolina

I had to dig my ski jacket out of the closet - it was so cold!

Toddler in the snow (yes, those are plastic bags over his shoes - we are not prepared for snow!)

Our new house in the snow (we're moving next weekend, but I wanted to get pictures of it in the snow)

The creek is frozen! I've never seen this in Charleston.

Closing out day 3 with snow still on the ground

I don't particularly enjoy winter (mostly because of the cold), but the one thing I miss since moving to the South is snow. I always said when I lived up in PA, if it was going to be cold, it better be snowing. And that's exactly what we got here last week. It was also the first time my son saw snow and his reaction was priceless (but he did hate the cold - like mother, like son).

Thankfully, our temps will return to normal by Monday and the snow and ice that's still hanging around from our deep freeze will be gone.

I still plan to take one more week mostly off from running. Instead, I'll continue with yoga and strength workouts to continue letting my piriformis heal. I'm hoping after that, I can get back to logging some miles again. And I'll have some new running scenery since we're moving to our new neighborhood. New year, new scenery? I'll take it.

How was your first week of the new year? Did it snow where you are?

As always, I'm linking up with HoHoRuns and Taking the Long Way Home for the Weekly Wrap series.
